Grow What You Throw: Rhoades Garden and Compost Project

January 23, 2019

On Saturday, January 19th, as part of the Service Learning initiative for the 2018-2019 school year, 5 Boy Scouts from Troop 766 in Rancho Santa Fe built planter boxes, protected them with chicken wire, set up an irrigation system and filled them with soil for The Rhoades School.  The planters were placed outside the school near the basketball courts. All materials used were kindly donated by The Rhoades Foundation and Grangettos Garden Supply Encinitas. The project took approximately 2 hours and was relatively easy to complete.

From The Foundation: A huge thanks to Dr Julie Watts for spearheading this educational and wonderful "hands-on" project which will enable Rhoades students to learn about composting, waste reduction and recycling.  The next phase will be worm composting and deciding what to plant! Our Rhoades Girl Scout troop will be working on this as well as the 6th and 7th grade mentor groups. The worms will be very excited about their new home!
