We are growing our service learning theme from last year, food waste and insecurity, to examine ways we can put our food waste to work. On October 17th and 18th, sustainability experts from the Solana Center of Encinitas visited Rhoades to teach our students about vermicomposting. Students learned how they can turn their "Waste to Wealth" through vermicomposting, or composting with worms! Students in all grade levels had hands-on experiences with worms and composting. The Solana Center donated a composting bin with worms, so our students can watch the process of turning their food waste into rich worm castings.
In early 2019, we will have volunteer opportunities for the Rhoades community at Feeding San Diego (Saturday, January 26 from 9-11am), as well as building garden boxes and a larger compositing bin for our school.
This project was made possible by your generous donations to The Rhoades Foundation.
