Feeding America
Date: Jan 11 and Mar 7, 2020
Time: 9:00AM - 11:00AM
Location: 9455 Waples Street, Suite 135 San Diego 92121

Our first Service Learning activity of the 2019-2020 school year will take place on Saturday, January 11, from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the Feeding America San Diego Warehouse in Sorrento Valley.
The mission of Feeding America San Diego is to end hunger through healthy food, education and advocacy. Last year, more than 13,000 volunteers helped Feeding America San Diego to distribute over 22 million pounds of food to San Diegans facing hunger; the Rhoades School community has wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity to make a difference in our local community by partnering with Feeding America San Diego in years’ past. All projects are geared around bagging, boxing, and distributing food that will be distributed to over 60,000 people each week; children ages six and up and their parents are welcome to join in this meaningful, worthwhile activity.
In order to participate in the volunteer event, parents and students must register online. Please click here to register online.

Casa De Amistad
Date: Monthly
Time: After School
Location: Solana Beach Presbyterian Church

Since the 2014-2015 school year, The Rhoades School has partnered with Casa de Amistad, an academic mentoring program in Solana Beach for children who will be the first in their family to attend college. Once a month, our 7th and 8th grade girls volunteer with young elementary children at Casa. Our students bring technology from Rhoades, such as BeeBots, Osmos, and Spheros, as well as simple engineering projects to engage the Casa children. This partnership enriches the Casa children, who have the opportunity to experience fun technology with Rhoades students as their teachers and mentors. At the same time, our students are filled with joy, wonder and awe by the smiles, hugs and appreciation of the Casa de Amistad children.

Leadership, public speaking, empowerment and girl-led decision making are just some of the skills Girl Scouts seeks to give girls the opportunity to experience in a fun, comfortable environment. In addition to their meetings and learning, our troops often serve as the color guard for school functions, have planted gardens on campus and provide outreach to local charitable organizations representing the Rhoades School.
For more information on Girl Scouts, or on how to join or start another troop at the Rhoades School, please contact one of our troop leaders.
